Job Description Who Are We?
Brightrock Games is an independent videogame studio based in Brighton, UK, with a core team of ten people from around the world. Our goal is to create genre-twisting simulation games in which players can experience their own stories. And if we can do it with a quirkily British sense of humour, then all the better!

Community is a huge part of what we do, and we pride ourselves on maintaining utmost transparency with our players. We’re like glass. No, water. Air?

Our first game, War for the Overworld, is a highly-praised dungeon management game which launched in 2015 for Windows, Mac and Linux. The game was a runaway success on Kickstarter, and it continues to grow and attract new players. We’re also now hard at work on our next title: watch this space!

Gameplay & Systems Designer
As the sole Gameplay & Systems Designer at Brightrock Games you will be the glue between the Creative Director and the rest of the team. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining the concrete design documentation that is used to inform all other departments in the work they do.

You will be a core part of a high performing small team of developers creating games in one of the most complex genres – simulation and management. As such, you are someone who enjoys theorycrafting and attempting to unravel and understand highly dependant gameplay systems. You get a kick out of a well made document or spreadsheet but never shy away from getting hot and heavy tweaking and balancing highly complex systems directly.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with our Creative Director to develop high-level design goals into detailed implementation documents
  • Work with the Code and Art teams to make sure your designs meet their requirements
  • Work with our QA team to ensure designs are correctly implemented and determine changes as required
  • Get your hands dirty and directly implement balancing & minor changes yourself


Essential:
  • Proven track record – Be it professional experience or personal projects, we don’t care
  • Technical proficiency – You must have a clear grasp of basic computer science concepts
  • Excellent documentation skills, including spreadsheeting and basic data analytics
  • Very high attention to detail and an analytical attitude towards playing games
  • Strong work ethic, time management and organisational skills
  • Able to interact well with a wide variety of people – whether communicating bugs, voicing feedback and concerns, interacting with the community, or having a laugh in the office
  • Able to work on-site in the Brighton, UK office


Desirable:
  • Experience with version control software like Git
  • Experience with bug tracking software like Jira
  • Experience with C#
  • Experience developing in Unity
  • Highly knowledgeable about strategy and simulation games like Dungeon Keeper, RollerCoaster Tycoon or Theme Hospital (super extra bonus points if you already know War for the Overworld inside out)
