Job Title Game Designer
Job Category Game Design
Job Description Are you a creative and dedicated game designer with experience in converting high level design goals into implementable systems? Or maybe a talented, experienced modder for Paradox Development Studio games and you want to contribute directly to our games? Are you interested in Paradox Development Studio and our brands and with a desire to help us bring them to the next level? Then you may be the one we’re looking for!

As a Game Designer at the development studio in Umeå, you will be an on-site project team member where you will be involved in designing gameplay features and systems under the guidance of the Game Director and Project Lead. You will have a direct and influential impact on the quality and feel of the game. We make games in the strategy, simulation/management and RPG genres. This means you will have a strong focus on mechanics, systems and balancing. Since Arctic is a small studio we expect people to have a broad set of skills. All our designers must be able to do both game design tasks and content design tasks.

We are seeking a game designer that is driven and hungry for learning more. You should enjoy working in a team but also be independent and able to take charge of a task and deliver beyond expectations. We care about quality and are motivated by the idea of our many fans around the world praising your work after release. You will thrive in a modern, creative environment where people working with you love their jobs and the games we make.

  • Validate and iterate features and mechanics while staying within the game’s vision and the Paradox Pillars
  • Expand on the design details and identify issues with the existing game design
  • Create & balance content for designed systems
  • Balance and tune existing gameplay features and systems
  • Engage in research on related topics to find inspiration for designing memorable gaming experiences
  • Work closely with the Artists and Programmers to make sure the design is properly implemented according to the specification
  • Defining asset needs required for the game design and communicating those effectively to the Game Director, Project Lead, Artists and Audio Department
  • Review and feedback design of peers

Required Qualifications
  • At least 2 years of professional games industry experience as Game Designer
  • Ability to translate design goals into tangible mechanics and balancing values
  • Ability to work independently with assigned tasks and take responsibility for delivering game design specifications according to the project’s schedule
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to reach consensus in an interdisciplinary team of subject matter experts
  • Fluent in speaking English and able to write design documentation in English

Additional Qualifications
  • Experience in programming or scripting is a major plus
  • Experience creating mods for Paradox Development Studio games is a major plus

As a person we think you are a passionate team player, willing to go that extra mile. At the same time you  are time conscious, able to make smart choices and “get shit done” when it's needed. You are open-minded, prestige-less and you see failures as opportunities to learn. You actively participate in design discussions and are not afraid to speak your mind. You are solution oriented and good at both giving and receiving feedback. You are a positive influence and support other team members.
