Project Background:
Jagex has begun exciting new projects that leverage our legendary RuneScape IP in creative ways. We are expanding a project team with expertise in the latest technologies, focused around Unreal Engine 5, to create a highly-skilled, player-focused development group that you could join. A core team based in Cambridge, augmented by members distributed globally, form a friendly, talented bunch keen to invite new members.

Job Purpose:
Jagex are looking for a talented Level Designer who is eager to showcase demonstrable on-screen progress from concept to ship for a new exciting new IP, built in Unreal Engine 5. Reporting to the Lead Designer, you will work alongside a cross disciplined team to plan, layout and build an immersive, rich open world. Both high-level paper design and hands-on work will be required for this role. Key Duties Include:

  • Paper map creation, block mesh level creation, hands-on environment creation, level scripting, combat scripting and performance scripting.
  • Work with leads and scrum teams as well as directors to ensure all aspects of the game are hitting expected quality benchmarks.
  • Build spaces that are easy to understand and fun to navigate for players.
  • Work closely with artists to bring levels from concept to final quality.
  • Coordinate closely with all department on needs including, outsourcing, audio, VFX and lighting, to sell all moments and encounters inside the world experience.
  • Document feature briefs, specs, design processes and workflows per leadership direction.

Essential Skills:

  • Experience working on at least 1 shipped console/PC title as a Level Designer.
  • Able to think artistically with a good sense for layout and composition.
  • Familiar with general 3rd person traversal and combat metrics for an open world.
  • Clear, analytical thinker with a proven ability to break down level design into easily building chunks and produce a larger space that is both visually interesting and highly functional.
  • Experience scoping and time estimating various level design tasks.
  • Self-organised and able to own tasks to their completion.
  • Effectively communicate level design ideas, changes, feedback, and iteration.
  • Understand current industry trends as it relates to modern level design.
  • Excellent knowledge of current level design theory and principles of what it takes to make an effective, engaging open world.  
  • Passion for games and game development.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment.
