Project Background:Jagex has begun exciting new projects that leverage our legendary RuneScape IP in creative ways. We are expanding a project team with expertise in the latest technologies, focused around Unreal Engine 5, to create a highly-skilled, player-focused development group that you could join. A core team based in Cambridge, augmented by members distributed globally, form a friendly, talented bunch keen to invite new members.

Job Purpose: Jagex are looking for a talented Senior Level Designer to join our new level design team, on an exciting, unannounced open-world, survival craft title. Reporting to the Lead Designer, you will work alongside a cross disciplined team to design and build a compelling open world for players to explore.Key Duties Include:

  • Take ownership of level designs from inception through to final release quality, while adhering to the high-level vision set out by the leads and directors.
  • Own each stage of the level design process. Create paper designs, level block-outs and world scripting.
  • Iterate layouts and balance gameplay ensuring the game hits the expected quality benchmarks.
  • Collaborate within multi-disciplinary teams to craft an engaging world for players to experience.
  • Help mentor less experienced designers on the team.
  • Help leadership to drive quality and standards across the team.
  • Participate in playtests and contribute constructive feedback on the game.

Essential Skills:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Level Designer with 2 or more shipped titles on console or PC.
  • Ability to think artistically with a good eye for layout and composition.
  • Experience designing open world spaces.
  • Experience designing spaces for 3rd person action games.
  • Experience with Unreal Engine.
  • Self-organised and able to time estimate tasks, owning them to their completion.
  • Strong creative thinker and problem solver.
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to evaluate and self-critique work.
  • Effectively communicate level design ideas, changes, feedback, and iteration.
  • Excellent knowledge of current level design theory and principles of what it takes to make an effective, engaging open world.  
  • Passion for games and game development.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to work in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • Have an interest in narrative world building and environmental storytelling.
