|Job Description||Sumo Digital is one of the UK's most prolific and secure independent game developers with a talented team spread across four UK Studios; Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle and The Chinese Room in Brighton, along with our India studio in Pune. The Nottingham studio became part of the Sumo Digital family in March of 2016.
Based in the Castle Marina area of the city and with Nottingham castle dominating the skyline, the new studio is a state-of-the-art space dedicated to supporting the highest calibre of game developments most creative people. The environment has been designed to be open, light and bright and to provide a creative and flexible space against which a new team can develop the latest ideas for today’s gaming platforms.
Our Nottingham studio is a real community of game loving, talented people who have a broad set of skills across a diverse range of games types including first-person shooter and racing games. We have been working hard on our first two projects – Team Sonic Racing for Sega and Project Nova for CCP and are about to embark on new projects.

The role @ Sumo
As a Tools Programmer at Sumo Nottingham you will be responsible for the day to day development of software tools to support programmers and content creators in making the game. You will be responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of new and existing tools. You will gather requirements from users and identify gaps and inefficiencies in the current toolset to inform your development work. You will be capable and responsible for estimating the time and cost of feature implementation, and then meeting those budgets. You will be helped in this by the lead programmer on the team, who will be your line manager.
In a typical day you will be required to design, implement and debug features within the tools you are working on, potentially working across multiple games and platforms simultaneously. You know how to use the development tools available to you, including 3rd party libraries and IDEs. You will have excellent communication skills enabling you to accurately report progress and issues as the feature progresses, allowing you and your team to manage the progress of the project.
To be successful you will have:
• A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a relevant role.
• Experience from outside the games industry or outstanding demos will be considered.
• GUI toolkit experience (e.g. WPF, wxWindows, Qt, etc..)
• Experience using source control systems (e.g. Perforce, CVS, SVN)
• Knowledge of game content creation pipelines and tools
• Strong math skills, especially in trigonometry and linear algebra
It would be advantageous if you have:
• Good time management and self-motivation skills.
• The ability to take direction and criticism.
• Knowledge of games systems (3D graphics, animation, camera control, lighting)
• Experience authoring plugins for DCC tools (e.g. 3DS Max, Maya)
• Experience working with and extending Unreal/Unity.
• Scripting experience (python/perl/etc…)
