Job Title Hardware Editor - Rock Paper Shotgun
Job Category Editor,Games journalist
Job Description Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the leading PC gaming website, is looking for a PC hardware expert to assist in expanding the website’s news, reviews and guides of products from monitors to graphics cards to VR headsets.

RPS is known for its entertaining articles, and accessible and conversational style. Our goal is to bring those same qualities to hardware coverage, and significantly expand the volume and utility of hardware articles on the site. We’re less interested in graphs measuring differences in milliseconds than in straight-to-the-point buyer’s advice for people who just want to play games - although the right candidate will need to be fully versed in hardware benchmarking and testing in order to inform their articles.

The successful applicant will drive hardware coverage on the site, monitoring the latest developments in PC technology and delivering timely and authoritative news, reviews and buyer’s guides in the established RPS style. They will work directly with the Editor-in-Chief to generate ideas for articles, and should be able to cut through marketing and jargon in order to write sparkling, expert prose to tight deadlines. Cultivating and maintaining relationships within the industry is a key part of the job, and a passion for games technology is essential.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Write excellent articles, including news, reviews and guides, about many kinds of PC technology.
  • Be self-directed in the planning and execution of PC hardware coverage, including around product releases, trade events, and Black Friday.
  • Engage with the RPS community in order to build the readership and establish hardware coverage as a key part of the RPS editorial offering.
  • Ensure articles are structured according to best practice for search engine optimisation (SEO) as well as clarity and usability for readers. Monitor their performance and adjust content where necessary to ensure they reach the broadest audience possible.
  • Work with the Commerce Writer to include affiliate links where appropriate.
  • Cultivate and work with industry contacts to obtain software and hardware for coverage.
  • Produce all coverage according to agreed upon deadlines and to budget.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrable ability to write concise, entertaining copy which explains complicated subjects in laymen’s terms.
  • A passion for games and technology.
  • The ability to be self-directed and pro-active in generating and executing ideas.
  • Experience in the PC hardware space, preferably in a journalism capacity, with an understanding of the most important trends and topics.
  • Experience of hardware testing and benchmarking.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive; strong organisational skills and a methodical mindset.
  • Positive attitude and a team mentality.
  • A basic understanding of SEO, website analytics, and how to create and adapt content to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Basic competence in image editing for presentation online.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Proven experience in PC hardware journalism, with established contacts at major manufacturers and suppliers.
  • An excellent understanding of SEO.
  • Previous experience with online publishing tools, including Wordpress, Google Analytics, FTP clients, etc.
