News Editor, Rock Paper Shotgun - ReedPop

ReedPop is looking for a News Editor to join Rock Paper Shotgun, our leading PC games website, and its team of writers and video makers, to expand its news coverage.

Reporting on games and their communities – both before and after release – has become an increasingly important focus for our coverage at RPS. This role will lead that daily and long-form reporting – from researching and writing multiple news stories per day, to defining the overall strategy of our news coverage for other writers to follow.

As News Editor, you will work within our highly experienced editorial team, with day-to-day support from our editors. Your responsibilities will include defining our approach in collaboration with our editorial leadership, as well as selecting and writing stories that resonate with our audience, being prolific within tight deadlines, unearthing stories others have missed from PC gaming's many active communities, and interviewing and developing sources to break stories first or add new value to reports already out there.

The successful applicant will have some journalism or published news writing experience, ideally now looking to step up to a section editor role. What’s most important is that you should be able to bring personality and reflection to your reporting, while being clear and precise with facts. If you are full of talent, ambition and drive to help us define how we report on the vibrant world of PC gaming, we’d like to hear from you, even if you don’t tick all the boxes.

When applying, please remember to include some links to your previous published writing or point to publications where you have made any contributions to the news section.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Produce multiple news stories per day on Rock Paper Shotgun, to deadline, with sparkling and accurate copy designed to inform and entertain.

  • Work closely with our editors to define, source, research and write your own original long-form reports, conduct interviews and investigate stories that matter to our readers.

  • Define the overall news strategy in collaboration with the editor-in-chief, in support of RPS’s broader goals, and communicate that strategy to other writers.

  • Edit news stories produced by other staff members and freelancers as necessary to make sure they meet our editorial standards.

  • Embed within game communities to spot potential stories. Be deep into some things and be willing to throw yourself into what you don't already know.

  • Work in our CMS to make sure stories meet a high standard of presentation

  • Collaborate with the entire editorial team on all aspects of our coverage, identifying potential topics and discussions that can be broken out of previews and features as individual news stories.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Demonstrable talent for good writing and reporting, especially in a PC gaming context.

  • Ability to unearth and tell interesting stories about games and their communities.

  • Willingness to secure interviews and ask tough questions.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.

  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive.

  • Positive attitude and a team mentality.

  • Passion and excitement about video games and gaming culture.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject.

  • Experience leading and editing other writers.

  • Knowledge of the games industry itself, with a clear interest in the sector.

  • An interest in the technology, entertainment and lifestyle sectors in general.
