Senior Gameplay Programmer

Avalanche Studios Group and its creative division, Expansive Worlds, are looking for a skilled and highly motivated Senior Gameplay Programmer for our successful title theHunter: Call of the Wild, based out of our studios in Stockholm and Malmö.
Initially released in 2017, Call of the Wild has been supported with many successful DLC and content releases. Now we want to shift gears a little and focus on improving the overall experience of the game (visuals, stability, performance, UX), especially on the latest generation of consoles, while continuing to provide fresh and new content to our loyal players.
As a gameplay programmer on this project you will work with our designers to conceive of and implement elements of scripted and emergent world content and activities. You will develop and maintain the tools and systems necessary for designers to create missions, build complex gameplay mechanics and tweak and balance the game. Your work will take you all over the codebase from underlying systems to weapons, from animations to user interface, from physics to VFX. In order to fully realize a feature or a section of gameplay, it is necessary to work closely with an array of disciplines.
What you'll do

  • Collaborate with designers, animators, and programmers to create solutions that bring the game’s vision to life.
  • Develop and iterate engaging gameplay features for both player and AI characters, blending technical and creative approaches.
  • Enhance and maintain systems like animation and tooling by analysing and improving existing engine features.
  • Contribute to a shared codebase and drive continuous improvements to our core technology.
  • Proactively identify and communicate risks related to technical debt, scalability, and robustness.
  • Stay current with evolving gameplay techniques and share insights with the team.
  • Support related disciplines such as AI programming or physics, based on project needs.
  • Mentor more junior developers on the best implementation practices on the engine.

Who you are

  • Excellent knowledge of C++
  • At least 5 years of Industry Experience, preferably on bespoke game engines
  • Experience with gameplay code and systems, especially in a multiplayer setting
  • Working knowledge of AI, physics, and animation systems
  • A keen sense of fun gameplay
  • Able to prioritize and work independently, requiring guidance only occasionally
  • Able to collaborate across disciplines
  • At least one shipped AA+ title for current or last generation consoles from start to finish
  • Experience with Coherent UI is a plus
