Senior Technical QA Engineer

The role
Avalanche Studios and the Tech Foundations team are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Technical QA Engineer.

As Senior Technical QA Engineer, you will take ownership of the quality and stability of our game engine development branch including both the Game Editor and Game Runtime. You will lead QA work for engine development, designing test strategies, defining quality criteria and gating processes, and working closely with engineers across our game teams to provide a stable, consistent, and predictable engine branch. You will be part of the Tech Foundations team, a central team that develops, maintains and operates shared technology and internal production tools used across the entire studio but also works closely with our game teams to create efficient workflows for our shared technology platform.

We need a technically skilled and proactive team member with heavy experience in game engine QA, someone who can take on the responsibility of owning quality end-to-end, from designing test coverage to driving visibility and leading other internal QA engineers. This role reports to the Tech Foundations Technical Director.
What you´ll do:

  • Lead the QA efforts for the engine development branch, ensuring quality and stability in Game Editor, Game Runtime and production tools
  • Design, maintain and execute on test plans, test cases and test coverage strategies for engine features and integrations
  • Define quality gating processes, including quality criteria and standards for what is required for a use-able and releasable engine branch
  • Report bugs with thorough technical detail, using debuggers, crash aggregation tools, console target managers, log files and callstacks
  • Produce clear quality reports and dashboards that give the team, leadership and the rest of the organization visibility into the health of the engine branch
  • Assist in integration workflows between game teams and the engine branch, identifying risks and ensuring smooth integration processes
  • Mentor and lead more junior Technical QA Engineers within the Tech Foundations team
  • Contribute to the team's CI/CD pipelines and build processes from a quality and stability perspective

Who you are:

  • Several years of experience in technical QA within the games industry, with experience testing AAA game engines and editors, either proprietary/custom engines or a public engine such as Unreal or Unity
  • Experienced in manual QA testing of both game editors and game runtime
  • Skilled at writing detailed, technical bug reports using tools like Windows debuggers, crash and assert aggregation tools (Sentry, Backtrace), platform-specific target managers (game consoles), log files, callstacks, asserts and more
  • Experience designing test plans, test cases and test coverage, including quality gating processes and acceptance criteria
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines. You don't need to write autotests yourself, but you should be able to design and plan autotest suites and work effectively alongside engineers who implement them
  • Experience working with bug tracking and planning tools (JIRA, TestRail, or similar)
  • Strong communication skills in English (written and verbal), with the ability to clearly communicate quality status and risks to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • A drive to take ownership, identify areas for improvement, and act on them

Note: Research shows under-represented groups in the industry might not apply to a job if they don’t check off every requirement. At Avalanche, we’re more about your drive to learn and interest in tackling challenges than what’s on your resume! So don’t stress if you don’t tick every box— shoot us your application anyway! Diverse opinions and different experiences are what make our teams so great, not itemized lists of qualifications.
