Technical Artist

We have an excellent opportunity for a passionate game developer to join our Total War team as a Technical Artist.  
Based at our well-established studio in the heart of Sussex in the UK, you will be working as a key member of the technical art team on our next unannounced Total War title. In this role, you will be able to make a real impact on our games. You will bring your knowledge and experience to help push the boundaries of the strategy genre by collaborating with the wider development team - striving to make our titles better than ever before.
 
Key Responsibilities   
As Technical Artist, you will collaborate closely with the art, design, and engineering to help achieve the visual ambition and performance target for the Total War franchise.   
As part of the Tech art team, you will be contributing to a wide range of technical art related responsibilities such as pipeline development, procedural generation, shaders, scripting, tooling, and performance. 

On a day-to-day basis, you will:   

  • Design, develop and support tools, scripts, and procedural creation pipeline to empower our fellow artists.  
  • Create and iterate on complex, well-optimised materials and shaders for game characters, props, and environmental assets.  
  • Identify and troubleshoot technical issues related to art asset creation and performance. Engage in team-based problem solving to diagnose unexpected issues. 
  • Stay up to date with the latest developments in art and technology and proactively identify opportunities for improving the visual quality and performance of our games. 

Knowledge, Skill, and Experience   

Essential 

  • Experience as a technical artist in at least 1 game development cycle to title release 
  • Has experience writing code in any language. (preferably python/C#) 
  • Knowledge and/or experience of shader creation HLSL and/or node based. 
  • Strong understanding of 3D modelling and texturing process.  
  • Working knowledge of industry-standard 3d content creation package(s) (e.g. 3dsmax, Maya, Blender) 
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. 
  • Team focused with strong communication skills.  
  • Able to bridge the gap in communication between programmers and artists and explain technical concepts to non-technical team members.  
  • Positive, can-do attitude.  

Desirable

  • Procedural content creation / Houdini knowledge. 
  • Working knowledge of Substance Designer/Painter. 
  • Art background or training. 
  • Profiling tools experience such as render doc/ PIX. 
  • Experience in multi-platform shader development
