Job Description Rock, Paper, Shotgun, the leading PC games website, is looking for a new Staff Writer to enhance its team of fabulous writers, editors and video makers. This role would involve writing news, reviews, and features, with a focus on entertaining readers with a personal, blog-y style.

We're looking for someone who can embody RPS's reputation for creative writing and personal insight, whether it's peppering your copy with jokes, shaping the conversation by lending stories your subjectivity and moral compass, or keeping a close eye on culture and communities to discover the PC game stories that other sites have missed.

The successful applicant will have some journalism or published writing experience, but it's fine if that's on your own blog that no one reads. They will mainly be full of talent, ambition and drive to produce and report on the vibrant world of PC gaming.

As a Staff Writer, you will work within our highly experienced editorial team, with day-to-day support from our editors. You’ll be primarily working on games news, but with the opportunity to work on interviews, features and travel the world to report on industry leading events.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Produce news, reviews and features on Rock, Paper, Shotgun, with scintillating copy designed to entertain as well as inform.
  • Source, research and write your own news stories with an eye towards community and culture reporting.
  • Conduct interviews with artists, designers, esports pros and other games industry professionals.
  • Embed within game communities to spot potential stories. Be deep into some things and be willing to throw yourself into what you don't already know.
  • Deliver accurate, clear and concise copy to hourly, daily and weekly deadlines, following well defined editorial standards.
  • Work in our CMS to make sure stories meet a high standard of presentation
  • Collaborate with the entire editorial team on all aspects of our coverage.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrable talent for good writing and reporting.
  • Ability to unearth and tell interesting stories about video games.
  • Willingness to secure interviews and ask tough questions.
  • A broad interest in all aspects of videogames, from mainstream releases to tiny indie curios.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive.
  • Positive attitude and a team mentality.
  • Passion and excitement about video games and the industry.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • A journalism qualification or degree in a relevant subject.
  • A blog or portfolio filled with examples of the kind of writing we already do.
  • Deep knowledge of one or more popular online service games such as Overwatch, Fortnite, PUBG, CSGO, Hearthstone, Destiny, etc.
  • Life experience and interests outside of games.

Please note that this is a full time, paid, permanent position (not freelance) with an entry level salary that would most likely suit a junior candidate looking to get established in full-time professional games writing, and you need to be able to work from our office in Brighton, UK.
