Job Description ReedPop is looking for an experienced Guides Editor to lead the guides team on our dedicated PC games site, Rock Paper Shotgun. Our in-depth, authoritative guides have a huge and appreciative audience, and we’re looking for the right candidate to lead their continued growth.

 As Guides Editor, you will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief and the rest of the editorial team to create the best original PC games guides on the internet. As well as creating guides content yourself, you'll set our content strategy for the section, selecting the right games and approaches. You will make sure our guides are always up to date, and ensure they meet the highest standards of presentation, accuracy and usability. 

You'll get your hands on the latest releases and learn them inside and out, tearing them down to give readers everything they need to enjoy them to the fullest. You’ll work with our existing guides teams across ReedPop to share best practice and ensure rigorous coverage of the most important games. You will manage any freelance budget, making sure time and money are well spent. You’ll form a key part of a team delivering authoritative and widely-read coverage of the world’s most popular PC releases.

Responsibilities Include:
  • Work with the Editor-in-Chief to select the right target games, and the best approaches, structure, and content priorities for our guides.
  • Maintain expert knowledge of the PC games space, including carefully monitoring popularity of new and existing games on Steam and other distribution platforms.
  • Manage the production and publishing schedule to make sure the team's time is well spent and our guides are as complete as possible, as early as possible.
  • Manage a freelance budget, working with external writers when necessary.
  • Ensure our guides are structured according to best practice for search engine optimisation (SEO) as well as clarity and usability for readers. 
  • Monitor guide performance and adjust content where necessary to ensure they reach the broadest audience possible.
  • Work with our teams to develop and adhere to best practice content creation and SEO.
  • Play major video game releases across many popular genres and deliver comprehensive, accurate, clear and concisely written guides under time pressure, ensuring they meet our editorial standards.
  • Edit guides copy written by others for accuracy, clarity and structure.

Required Skills and Experience:
  • Demonstrable experience of writing in-depth guides to complex subjects.
  • A sound understanding of SEO best practices.
  • Superb writing style, with an emphasis on clarity and economy, but also a personable tone. Jokes are allowed.
  • Ability to edit other writers' copy to high standards of accuracy often to a deadline.
  • Extensive knowledge of video games across a wide range of genres, with a particular focus on the highest-profile new releases and most played games on Steam.
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of determination and drive; strong organisational skills and a methodical mindset.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Positive attitude and a team mentality, with great attention to detail.
  • Passion for PC games and video gaming in general.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Experience of managing writers, but can be an established writer looking to step up.
  • General familiarity with the digital publishing environment, CMS, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of modern video game design and trends.
  • An existing in-depth or expert knowledge in particular popular PC games or genres. 
  • Knowledge of the games industry itself, with contacts or a clear interest in the sector.
  • An interest in the technology, entertainment and lifestyle sectors in general.
  • Degree in a relevant subject, especially Journalism, English or a related media subject.
