|Job Description||Sumo Digital is one of the UK's most prolific and secure independent game developers with a talented team spread across four UK Studios; Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle and The Chinese Room in Brighton, along with our India studio in Pune. The Nottingham studio became part of the Sumo Digital family in March of 2016.
Based in the Castle Marina area of the city and with Nottingham castle dominating the skyline, the new studio is a state-of-the-art space dedicated to supporting the highest calibre of game developments most creative people. The environment has been designed to be open, light and bright and to provide a creative and flexible space against which a new team can develop the latest ideas for today’s gaming platforms.
Our Nottingham studio is a real community of game loving, talented people who have a broad set of skills across a diverse range of games types including first-person shooter and racing games. We have been working hard on our first two projects – Team Sonic Racing for Sega and Project Nova for CCP and are about to embark on new projects.

The role @ Sumo
As a Graphics Programmer at Sumo Nottingham you will be responsible for the day to day development of rendering features for the games currently in development. You will specify, design and implement rendering systems within a title, potentially mentoring more junior programmers to help achieve the project goals. You will be capable and responsible for estimating the time and cost of feature implementation, and then meeting those budgets. You will be helped in this and report to the lead technology programmer on the team who will be your line manager.
In a typical day you will be required to design, implement and debug features within the game you are working on, potentially working across multiple platforms simultaneously. You know how to use the tools required, including graphics debugging and performance measurement tools to refine and polish the game’s rendering systems to meet the highest standards. You will have excellent communication skills enabling you to both gather requirements and accurately report progress and issues as the feature progresses, allowing you and your team to manage the progress of the project. Finally, you will be able to share your knowledge and experience with the rest of the team, improving their abilities on a day to day basis.
To be successful you will have:
• Excellent experience of C++ and shader coding and debugging.
• Experience in graphics specialism, from high level rendering systems and techniques to low level optimisation.
• An in-depth knowledge of current rendering APIs and current generation GPUs.
• Strong 3D maths skills.
• Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
• Shipped at least 1 title (preferably console).
Ideally you will also have:
• Good time management and self-motivation skills.
• Ability to take direction and criticism.
• Knowledge of rendering related middleware.
• Knowledge of large-scale asset pipelines.
